In Henderson, more than a hundred baseball players were chasing their big-league dreams today. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays held open tryouts at Henderson high school, and dozens of East Texas' high school and college players came to try out, and show off their stuff for the scouts.
"I'm trying to see where I stand as far as how I can get to the big leagues," former Arp and current SFA catcher Chris Taliaferro said. "I'm going to see what it will take to get there, and what I need to improve on."
"It means a lot to me as a person who lived it, Tampa Bay scout Pat Murphy said. "We want to make sure everybody gets a fair shake."
"Hey, Mickey Mantle came from a tiny town in Oklahoma. It happens!"
Murphy said he comes to East Texas because his family was from here. His mom and dad graduated from Kilgore, and he said he knows the talent level in the area.
