Lt. Governor David Dewhurst released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Kennedy v. Louisiana:
"I'm disappointed with the Supreme Court's decision this morning. I believe, and the vast majority of Texans agree, that the death penalty is an appropriate form of punishment for repeat child molesters. Our top priority remains protecting our most precious resource--our children. Fortunately, our law here in Texas was carefully crafted to give prosecutors the option of seeking life in prison without parole in the event a court invalidated the death penalty provision. "It's ironic that, while a bare majority of the court felt there was no 'national consensus' for imposing the death penalty in non-capital cases, it has effectively prev ented states like Texas from developing such consensus from this point forward."
