Arrests Exptected in 24-48 Hours in Murder of Smith Co. Man

After following leads all night Wednesday, Smith County authorities say they are close to making several arrests in the murder of a 36 year old Smith County man.

Sheriff's investigators say Jeffrey Edward Joplin was killed in a violent struggle, likely with more than one person.

Joplin's own father was the one who discovered his back door open and his home ransacked yesterday afternoon.

Investigators still aren't sure about the existence or location of a murder weapon.

"It's difficult to say at this point because of the struggle that occurred at the residence," says Captain Mike Lusk, Smith County Sheriff's Department. "They're not through inside and I don't want to mislead you, but we don't know if there is a weapon there yet and I will certainly update you if we find that out."

An autopsy is expected very soon to reveal how joplin died.
