Local Grocery Stores Pulling Raw Tomatoes Off Shelves

KLTV 7 News has learned that all Albertson's, Kroger, and Brookshire's stores in East Texas have pulled both Roma and single raw tomatoes from their produce sections after a salmonella scare over raw tomatoes this week.

Currently, you can still buy cherry tomatoes or tomatoes on the vine at their stores.

21 cases of salmonella poisoning have been reported in Texas, linked to uncooked tomatoes. None of those cases are in East Texas, but Todd Alston, the produce manager of the Brookshire's grocery store on Rice Road here in Tyler, says they're not taking any chances.

"Well, for the safety of our customers, we went ahead and pulled all the product so there wouldn't be any concern that any of our customers are taking up any kind of bacteria that could be on the tomatoes. All our product has been pulled from all of our stores for safety measures, until everything is taken care of and the investigation is done."

KLTV 7 News has attempted to contact Walmart about how they're handling their produce, but haven't recieved a response yet.
