A fiery crash on Interstate 30 claimed two lives and severely damaged a bridge overpass.
It happened around 7:30 this morning on eastbound side of I-30 at fm 1402 just north of Mount Pleasant. That bridge will be closed indefinitely. Investigators say the truck driver lost control, ran off the roadway and crashed headlong into a concrete bridge column, the 18 wheeler hit the overpass column , and exploded, with the driver and a passenger trapped inside.
"I arrived on scene to find the truck tractor not fully engulfed but on fire not knowing whether we had a driver or co-driver in the vehicle," says DPS trooper Dennis McBride.
McBride rushed to the mangled wreckage trying to get the victims out.
"I went to the truck got a fire extinguisher tried to put the fire out but to no avail," says McBride.
Investigators say the truck driver was going so fast when he went off the road that he hit a concrete bridge column and moved it six inches, and the bridge is going to be out indefinitely until supports can be put in. The site of the crash left many on the scene with a haunting image.
"My family travels up and down this highway also and what could happen to them it affects you that way," McBride says.
TXDOT has closed the FM 1402 bridge to traffic, and all eastbound traffic on I-30 is being diverted to access roads until further notice.
