Five East Texas bar-b-que restaurants are featured in the current issue of Texas Monthly as the best bar-b-que joints in Texas. One is near Kilgore, where people from all over East Texas travel to the rural location on Highway 31 and farm road 2767 to get a taste of Country Tavern bar-b-que.
"Everybody in Tyler knows about this place. The Country Taverns been here as long as I have," said longtime Tyler visitor Nona Milstead.
"The best place in Texas," said Tyler visitor Pat Eppler.
Since 1939 people come from all over for one reason: the ribs!
"It's definitely the ribs that we've made our name on" says Country Tavern owner Toby Pilgrim.
With a 4.5 rating out of 5, Texas Monthly says their ribs are "the prettiest in Texas", and the sauce as having an edgy tang, and their waitresses likened to the girl next door.
"Most that come in here are regulars, but we get a lot from out of town. We make them feel at home when they are here" said waitress Terri Kidd.
And the tavern has been host to numerous celebrities over the years, like Robert Duvall, Larry Hagman and former president George Bush.
With a reputation for being the best, Country Tavern hopes to be in business for another 69 years.
So who else is on Texas Monthly's list? Cripple Creek B-B-Q in Athens, Stacy's in Jacksonville, Baby J's Bar-b-que and Fish in Palestine, and Stanley's Famous Bar-b-que in Tyler.
