Reverend Doctor James Ballard Remembered

He will be remembered for his life of service and willingness to always help others.

Friday, family and friends said goodbye to Reverend Doctor James Ballard, Mayor of Lindale and police chaplain.  Ballard passed away Saturday after a bout with a short illness.

Ballard was known for his gift of organization and always planning ahead.  He even knew what he wanted at his funeral before he died.  It's those skills, friends say allowed Ballard to accomplish so much, like kick starting what is now the St. Paul Children's Foundation and starting the Tyler Police Department's Volunteer Chaplains Program.  That, and his passion to help others.

"He was loving, understanding, caring and always willing to do whatever he could for you," said fellow Tyler Police Chaplain Rev. Clara Gilbert.  "He totally was concerned about your well being."  For more than 25 years, Ballard also pastored First United Methodist Churches in Colorado and Texas.

"He was a very intelligent person and he was a Bible scholar, and I think he brought Biblical knowledge to a lot of people," said friend from church Glenda Slawson.  Ballard did not stop there.  After retiring from his pastoral duties in 2006, Ballard became Mayor of Lindale.  He led a life, friends say, that will never be forgotten.

Dr. Ballard is survived by his wife of 30 years, three sons and six grandchildren.
