Five Years Back, Overton Baseball Rises To New Heights

Five years ago, no one would have ever imagined that the Overton Mustangs would be ranked number two in the state in baseball.

Of course, five years ago, Overton didn't even have a baseball program.

This year, the Mustangs are three rounds in and state-ranked. The program restarted from scratch in 2005, and this year has made their longest playoff run ever.

"We're eating it up," Overton senior utility player Cody Hudson said. "None of us are used to this success. We all set goals at the beginning of the year. We knew what could happen, we just had to put the work in and here we are at 20-2."

Senior third baseman Clint Cain agreed.

Just knowing that in years to come, there's going to be other players that come up will be looking to reach the goals that we set, it feels good."

It's also a special run for head coach Travis Jackson. He graduated from Overton, and played on one of their last teams of the 1990's before the program was shut down.

Overton plays McLeod at Harmony this weekend.
