Peace Officers Memorial Service

Sometimes, they give their lives to protect ours. Wednesday the Tyler-Smith County peace officers held a memorial service on the downtown square.

They honored those officers who died in the line of duty, and had a few special moments for former Tyler Police Chaplain reverend James Ballard. They placed a wreath in memory of who they called "Chappy" who served so faithfully to Tyler. Officer Don Martin said Chappy loved the officers and those officers loved him. His widow kissed a rose and placed it on his wreath.

"When we go out on calls it's not about us. It's about others. Being able to be there for someone in need," said Lieutenant Dianna Jackson of the Tyler Police Department.

Two more ceremonies will be held Thursday. In Harrison County at the courthouse in Marshall at 12:00. Another will be held at the Rusk County Courthouse in Henderson at 11 a.m.
