Longview: Sign Ordinance Amendment Heads To City Council For Vote

It got a little heated Monday in Longview City Council Chambers. Several Longview business owners voiced their opinion about possible ordinance changes dealing with electronic billboards.

Specifically, whether the sign's animation cause distractions to drivers. Business owners who already own electronic billboards, want to keep things as they are.

"If I changes are made to my sign, I would expect the city to reimburse me for my sign, my instillation, my sign cost, and the money it would cost for me to remove the sign," said Dr. Harry Evans, owner of "Affordable Contacts & Glasses".

Longview Mayor, Jay Dean says Longview business that currently have electronic signs will be grand fathered in.

"We want to allow our current sign owners that use some animation to explain or present their message to continue doing that and still be within that area where it's not a distraction to the driver," said Mayor Jay Dean.

The Longview City Council will have another public hearing on the sign ordinance in June, and they could vote on the proposed changes at that meeting.
