Dr. Sebetha Jenkins, the 10th president of Jarvis Christian College, announced her plans for retirement to the Board of Trustees effective December 31, 2008. She has been the president of the College since January 1991.

Dr. Jenkins stated," I will miss the ever changing higher education atmosphere, the beautifully landscaped campus, and the numerous opportunities to influence the lives of my motivated and deserving Jarvis scholars, faculty, and staff. I wish to thank my alumni and the Board of Trustees for their support and encouragement for the past 17 years."

Mr. James Atkinson, the chairman of the Board of Trustees and a retired executive of Kraft Foods, Inc., praised Dr. Jenkins for her leadership over the past years as she bestowed diplomas upon graduates at her 18th commencement on May 3, 2008. Atkinson notes the growth, development, and stability of Jarvis Christian College during her tenure.

The Board of Trustees' Search Committee will be led by Chairman Atkinson. The Board of Trustees has granted President Jenkins a well-deserved sabbatical, effective August 1, 2008, when she will do reflective thinking and planning for her new status. She will be available to insure a smooth transition to the new leadership.

A key list of Dr. Jenkins' accomplishments during her time at Jarvis include:

New construction and major renovations at the College

Successful SACS Reaffirmations in 1993 and 2003

Increased alumni involvement and giving

Service on National Boards including the President's White House Initiative

Enhancement of academics, including First Year Experience and academic audits

Strategic increase in student enrollment

"Rather than dwell on the retirement of our president, I would prefer that the College community join me in being thankful for the opportunity we have had to have her services for seventeen years," reported Board member, Eddie Poindexter, an executive with Walgreens.

Prior to joining Jarvis Christian College, Dr. Jenkins served as teacher and administrator in higher education in Mississippi and Ohio since 1960. She completed her undergraduate degree from Jackson State, the masters degree from Delta State, and the doctorate degree from Mississippi State.
