Oil Tanks Explode, But No Injuries

Last night, fire fighters from Kilgore, Overton, and Sabine responded to an explosion at a tank battery site in Liberty City. Six saltwater tanks and a storage tank containing two hundred gallons of crude oil went up in flames.

The tanks were owned by the Key Energy Corporation. When representatives of Key Energy arrived, they surveyed the damage and chose to let the tanks burn out rather than risk spreading the oil and causing a greater environmental problem.

Company officials suspect a lightning strike may have ignited the oil.

Gregg County Fire Marshall Jerry Pierce sited the accident as an example of effective safety precautions, as fire fighters were able to safely contain the blaze, and no injuries were reported.
