The ninth-ranked University of Texas at Tyler Patriots (40-7) lost an eight-inning heartbreaker on Thursday, falling to the University of La Verne (28-17) in Day 1 of the 2008 NCAA Division III Softball Tyler Regional, 3-1.
La Verne jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, when Kari Granger scored off of a single from Melissa Carlson.
The Leopards would hold the lead at 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning.
With two outs, pinch hitter Kara Turner reached on an error by LaVerne's Lynsey Padilla that allowed pinch runner Courtney Carrizales to score to tie the game at one.
In the top of the eighth, Padilla earned redemption by hitting a sacrifice fly that allowed Ashley Paul to score. Two batters later, the Leopards added another run off of a single from Mandy Brenner.
In the bottom of the inning, the Patriots placed a runner on base with one out with a single by catcher Brittanni Hanna. However, UT Tyler's rally was cut short when Sara DeStefano hit into a double play to end the game.
La Verne pitcher Jessica McLaughlin went the distance in the game, giving up no earned runs off of four hits with four strikeouts.
With the win seventh-seed La Verne earns a spot in Friday's 2 p.m. game with the No. 3 seed, Mary Hardin Baylor, while the second seeded UT Tyler heads to the elimination bracket for a 10 a.m. match-up with the No. 5 seed, University of Redlands.
