DOES IT WORK

Save-a-Blade - Does It Work?

Chances are, if you promised to buy their ink for life, the inkjet printer companies would probably give you the printer for free! The same thing is true with razors and the disposable blade cartridges.

All the money is in the those little, 2, 3 and 4 blade razor heads.

But now someone has come up with a little gadget that could throw a kink in the whole system.

It's called the Save A Blade. And this week, we put it to the "Does It Work?" test.

It's the automatic razor sharpener that works with all makes-- from single blade disposables to multi-blade cartridges.

But here's the headline: "Up to 200 shaves from a single blade."

Photographer, Philip Stauts brought his razor along. It's one of the most expensive on the market for replacement blades. He says the blade in this test has been on there for about two months and it's getting very dull.

Philip's skipped a few shavings for our test, so you have to admire a guy willing to use a two month old razor on a face that really needs a shave.

For our test, he'll shave one side before sharpening the blade and shave the other after using the Save A Blade.

Philip says on the "dullness scale" this razor rated about a 4...with 5 being the most dull.

The Save A Blade features a clip to hold the razor head down on the sharpener. The sharpener is hidden inside. It's a little cylinder that spins very fast. The makers say it's made of silicone carbide.

Clip your blade face down on the sharpener and hold the button down for five seconds.

Philip immediately notices the edges of the blades look shinier.

The proof will come when he shaves the other side of his face.

He could tell a difference immediately.

"Better," he says. "Without a doubt. Almost like when the blade's brand new. That's what it feels like."

The spots that were painful on the other side of his face with the dull razor, went much better this time.

On the "dullness scale" the blade did much better after five seconds on the Save A Blade.

"I would have to give it at least a two. But it's probably getting close to a one," says Philip. "It's like a brand new blade!"

Phil says he has much less skin irritation on the Save A Blade right side of his face than on the left.

"Does It Work?" We give the Save A Blade a "yes."

We got the Save A Blade at Walgreen's for $19.99. It works with all razors, but the instructions say, if you use the Schick Quattro, you'll have to cut some little wires on the blades first, to make it work.
