UT Tyler Professor Awarded Office Of Naval Research Fellowship

Dr. Arun Kulkarni, professor of computer science at The University of Texas at Tyler, has been awarded the U.S. Office of Naval Research 2008 Senior Summer Faculty Fellowship, Dr. James Nelson, College of Engineering and Computer Science dean, announced.

For 10 weeks this summer, Kulkarni will work in Monterey, Calif. as a senior summer faculty fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory to enhance marine advisories and evacuation plans. The project relates to the estimation of tropical cyclone intensity using images obtained from a special sensor microwave imager.

Critical decision making that includes public and marine advisories and evacuation plans is impacted by TC analysis, and inaccurate intensity estimations and predictions are potentially costly in both monetary and human terms, according to Kulkarni.

"Analysis of remotely-sensed data has become an increasingly valuable tool for determining the TC location and structure, formulating TC intensity estimates and predicting strength and movement," he said. "Current techniques make use of images in visual and infrared bands. Using SSM/I images to examine TC structure has an advantage when compared with the limitations of other types of images."

Kulkarni has worked on analysis of multi-spectral images for the last 25 years and presented his research work at numerous professional meetings. He authored two text books, published more than 60 peer reviewed papers and successfully completed eight research grants.
Kulkarni holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology at Bombay, India.

The Office of Naval Research sponsors science and technology in support of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. For more information about the ONR, visit http://www.onr.navy.mil/.
