A wounded East Texas soldier received a special gift Saturday afternoon, one that will help him move forward in life. In January of 2007, the District 3 American Legion family started the Frank Fields Project and began raising money for a handicap-accessible van. Fields lost both his legs in Iraq when he was hit by a road side bomb. Saturday, after several bake sales, steak dinners and a chili cook-off, Fields received his brand new van.
"This has been months and months in the making," said Fields. "There was so much behind the scenes that you can't even describe it, so many people coming together and just putting forth to a great cause, and like I said it's a blessing in a half." After the van was purchased, Fields had around $8,000 left over. He decided to donate half of the money to the District 3 Heroes to Hometown program to help other soldier's in need.
