'Drive Clean Across Texas' Campaign To Reduce Air Pollution

Two Texas state agencies have launched a "Drive Clean Across Texas" air quality campaign to encourage motorists to take small steps to reduce air pollution.

Campaign organizers at the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality recommend changing a vehicle's oil regularly, keeping tires properly inflated and replacing oil and air filters. The agencies say those steps would help motorists reduce tailpipe emissions and improve gas mileage by up to 5 percent.

That saves as much as 35 cents per gallon with gas prices now approaching $4 per gallon.

The campaign also recommends that drivers remove unnecessary weight from vehicles, drive the speed limit, reduce engine idling and stop at the "click" when filling up their gas tanks.

Campaign organizers say a poorly maintained vehicle can release as much as 10 times the emissions of a well-maintained one.

The campaign will reward one Texan with a new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid in an online sweepstakes this summer.
