East Texas Immigrants One-Step Closer To Gaining U.S. Citizenship

Nearly 50 East Texas immigrants are now one-step closer to gaining their U.S. citizenship. Saturday was national Citizenship Day, organized by the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Attorneys across the country, and here in East Texas, offered their services pro-bono to help immigrants obtain citizenship.  Immigration fees usually cost around $700, but as long as they registered with this event, it was all free.

"These are hard-working people that are trying to do the right thing," said Immigration Attorney Jose Sanchez.  "Now, they're taking the next step to becoming U.S. citizens because they love this country and they want to be here.  This is their way of showing their loyalty."  About 40 people registered for Saturday's event, plus a number of walk-ins came as well.
