Lawyer Murdered in Beaumont Remembered in East Texas

Violence at an Southeast Texas law office Thursday morning leaves a former Tyler attorney dead.

Police say 79-year old Richard Gerzine of Vidor opened fire at the Beaumont law firm of Reaud, Morgan and Quinn, before being subdued. Gerzine allegedly was upset over an asbestos claim he wanted the law firm to handle -- but the case had been declined.

Former Tyler attorney Chris Quinn died at the scene. Quinn worked for Federal Judge William Steger of Tyler for two years back in the early eighties.  Judge Steger remembers Quinn as a vibrant young man who helped Steger not just on the bench, but through tough times.

Steger: "I had lost my only son, Reed, who had died in a scuba diving accident, that April.  And he (Quinn) was quite a comfort to me during that grieving period that I had... Outstanding young man."

Steger says Chris Quinn was a good family man, and devout Christian. He leaves behind a wife and five children.
