Volunteer Firefighters Working Two Jobs

Most East Texas towns are served by volunteer firefighters with unpaid positions.

Caleb Middleton is a 19 year-old Lindale man who has served his community as a volunteer firefighter for two years.

“Takes a little bit of getting used to,” Caleb says. “This is just like another job, you know. This is just pretty much a part-time job that you don't get paid for just cause you enjoy it.”

Volunteers leave their families and businesses behind when the alarm is sounded. Wednesday afternoon, Caleb left his family’s candy factory to help put out a grass fire.

“We got there just in time because it was going up the walls in a trailer house,” Caleb said.

The Lindale Fire Department is made of forty volunteers, and they estimate they will be called out over eight hundred times this year.
