Congress Works On Tax Initiatives As Deadline Looms
The House wants to prevent tax cheats from winning government business.
As millions of Americans grapple with finishing their tax forms by the midnight deadline, House lawmakers approved a measure Monday to make sure none of the money people send in goes to deadbeat companies.
Meanwhile, two Senate Democrats are promoting a bill that would require the IRS to allow all Americans to file their returns electronically free of charge.
They say it would save taxpayers more than one billion dollars a year. The IRS says that as of ten days ago it had issued more than 75 million refunds.
