Community leader, mentor and all around good person, Monday morning Smith County Commissioners remembered one of their own who influenced so many. Former Smith County Judge Larry Craig passed away Saturday at the age of 71. Craig served four terms in office, the first for any other Smith County judge in history. In Monday morning's commissioners court meeting, Craig was remembered with a moment of silence.
"He was a great man to work for, an innovator," said Smith County Commissioner, Precinct 2 Bill McGinnis. "He brought this county kicking and screaming into the 21st century. He was very diplomatic about moving things along even when there was resistance. "
"Up until now, I've been through five county judges, and he's the best we've ever had," said Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith. "The best I can ever recall we've had in this county, and he did so much for our community." Funeral services for Craig will be Tuesday at Marvin United Methodist Church in Tyler at 1:00 p.m.
