A'Quonesia Franklin, Shannon Bobbitt Drafted By WNBA

Professional dreams came true for two East Texas athletes.

Former John Tyler Lady Lion A'Quonesia Franklin was drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA. Franklin, who led Texas A&M to the NCAA tournament's Elite 8, went in the third round as the 38th overall pick.

As an athlete at John Tyler, A'Quonesia was all-state, led the Lady Lions to a top state ranking and was 34-1 her senior year.

KLTV 7 Sports Director Maya Golden spoke to A'Quonesia by phone from College Station Thursday afternoon. A'Quonesia said she was watching the draft on television when she first saw her name.

"A couple of my teammates were here at school watching it with me," she said. "I just screamed. I was excited. I started crying. Then my mom gave me a call and I was just excited."

Also, former Trinity Valley Community College star Shannon Bobbitt was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks. Bobbitt won a national championship with Tennessee this year, and went with the first pick of the second round, the 15th overall pick.
