Celebrate Earth Day At Camp Tyler

The East Texas community is invited to celebrate Earth Day East Texas at Camp Tyler from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 20. Visitors will be able to visit booths sponsored by Earth-friendly businesses and organizations that will promote this year's theme of "A Smaller Footprint."

'The main purpose of this free event is for everyone to leave with at least one thing new that they can do to make a smaller footprint,' said Debbie Shafer, event chair.

Activities will include hayrides, nature trail walks, bird watching, gardening, recycling and composting. There will be live music and entertainment throughout the day, along with a selection of food for purchase. Children will be invited to the Camp Tyler Petting Farm and encouraged to play "green" educational games to earn an Earth Day East Texas patch (shown above).

Groups that will be participating include A Circle of Ten, Angelina Neches River Authority, Arborgen, Arc of Smith County, Asthma Camp, Cool Planet, East Texas Trekkers, G.L.O.B.E.-Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment, Girl Scouts of North East Texas, Kappa Delta Pi, Keep Tyler Beautiful, Keep Whitehouse Beautiful, Sister Communities Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Southwest Center for Pediatric Environmental Health, Smith County Master Gardeners, Texas Master Naturalists, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Tyler Audubon Society, Tri Beta, Tyler Parks and Recreation and the University of Texas at Tyler Early Childhood Educators and UT-Tyler Science Methods.

Other environmentally conscious businesses and groups are invited to contact Rodd Wayne at (903) 262-1269 to sign up for a booth and participate in Earth Day East Texas. Camp Tyler is located on Lake Tyler at 15143 Camp Tyler Road in Whitehouse.
