East Texas Bus Riders Dodge Paying High Fuel Cost

Every morning when Jay Jones heads to work he takes the Longview Transit bus instead of driving his gas guzling vehcile.  "It's costing me $60 every week for fuel. Just to go back and forth to work, it just cost too much.  After I pay all the bills and rent  I don't have a lot of gas money left to put in the vehicle. So, I use Longview Transit to get back and forth to work," said Jones.

Longview Transit Manager, Godfrey Offoegbu says Longview Transit has seen an increase of riders on their buses. With fuel prices up Longview Transit has to pay more to fill up their tanks. "Longview Transit has been seeing an increase anywhere between 2% to 3% per month, per riders. Currently it's costing about 50 to 60 dollars a day, per bus, to fill up the busses," said Offoegbu.

At the cost of $1.00 a trip, Longview Transit says they haven't had to raise their fare yet, but it could happen.  "As the prices keep going up we have to make those budget revisions to accommodate the fuel," said Offoegbu.

Tyler Transit also says they've seen an increase in riders. Their fare is .75 cents per trip.
