Emergency Crews Rush To Storm-Ravaged Cullman County, Alabama

Cullman County was the hardest hit area in north Alabama as a result of Friday's severe weather.

At around 11:30 p.m.,  storms tore through the 'Dairy Queen' area on Highway 31, the Belk Shopping Center, the old Cullman Hospital, and a nearby residential area.

Authorities were so overwhelmed in Cullman that firefighters, State Troopers and paramedics from surrounding areas were called in to help them.

Students in the Cullman City School System were allowed to go home early.

Wallace State Community College in Hanceville was closed for the remainder of the day and all afternoon activities were cancelled.

A gas leak at the Dairy Queen forced several residents from their homes, but the WAFF 48 Investigators have since learned that some people have been allowed to return home.

There's a staging area set up at the EMA office in Cullman, where the media is being briefed about the latest developments.
