Indians Tap Wells For New Head Football Coach

The vote was taken Thursday morning, and former Mineola coach Steve Wells was made the new AD and head football coach at Jacksonville. Wells said the Tribe's tradition is legendary.

"The stadium has got just an air about it," Wells said. "When you talk about Jacksonville, the first thing you're going to talk about is the Tomato Bowl, and burning the J, and the tradition there. Coach Long, when he was there had a lot of winning years here and a lot of success. Hopefully we can bring that tradition back here."

Wells already has his staff in place for the 2008 season, a move that the board thinks will help the Indians hit the ground running.

"His offensive and defensive coordinators  are coming with him," JISD school board member Pat McCown explained. "That puts you at least a year ahead of the curve."

Wells is excited, but also a bit melancholy leaving Mineola after two years.

"A lot of mixed emotions," Wells admits, "excitement about coming to a new job, a big job, one of the better 4A jobs in the state of Texas.  You're also leaving a lot of kids that you love in Mineola, there's been a few tears shed in that respect, but we're really excited about this job."

As of today, the Tribe have their new chief.
