Texas Company's 3 Workers Presumed Dead In Fall From Arkansas Bridge

Three construction workers with a Texas company are presumed dead after falling today from an Interstate 430 bridge over the Arkansas River.

The late-morning accident happened at Little Rock.

A spokeswoman for Central Arkansas Water says the men were employed by Oscar Renda Contracting of Roanoke, Texas.

Authorities say three workers fell 40 to 50 feet to the river.

A sheriff's spokesman says four men were on a platform of scaffolding and one was able to hold on and call for emergency help -- before he was rescued.

The others fell into the river, as did some of the scaffolding. The platform was big enough to hold the men, two generators and a welding machine. The utility contracted with the Dallas-area company in April 2006 to install two sections of 30-inch-diameter waterlines under and across the bridge.
