Keep Tyler Beautiful Hosting 'Trash Fishing' Event Saturday

What's swimming in the Rose Rudman Creek? The answer isn't always good, such as cigarette filters, plastic bags and beverage containers, but with the help of Tyler citizens, that can change.

Keep Tyler Beautiful invites all area residents to join them as they fish litter and debris out of Texas waters as part of the Rose Rudman Creek Cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 5. Rose Rudman Park runs along South Donnybrook Avenue between Loop 323 and Rieck Road.

Organizations, businesses, residents and their children are invited to come out and pick up litter in the park and along the creek bed to improve water quality, restore natural beauty and reduce potential threats to human health and wildlife. Volunteers will meet at the pavilion south of Shiloh Road at 8:45 a.m. Participants are encouraged to wear bug spray and sun block. Trash bags and litter pick-up tools will be provided. Volunteers will be treated to prizes provided by Bennigan's, Tyler Solid Waste, Tyler Historical Aviation Memorial Museum, Allied Waste, Suddenlink and more.

Each year, litter decreases water quality, blocks storm drains, reduces aesthetic appeal, and kills thousands of animals through ingestion or entanglement.

The Rose Rudman Creek Cleanup is supported by the Texas Waterway Cleanup Program, a partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.  The program assists community organizations, scout and youth groups, schools, local governments, businesses, and concerned citizens across the state as they host inland freshwater area cleanups and environmental education activities.

Many of America's leading companies are dedicated to supporting and sponsoring the efforts for the 2008 Great American Cleanup. The National Sponsors are: American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Firestone Complete Auto CareTM and TiresPlusTM, GLAD® ForceFlex® Trash Bags, Pepsi-Cola Company, Sam's Club®, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, Sprint, Troy-Bilt®, Waste Management, Inc., Dow®, and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company; The Texas Department of Transportation.
