Gregg County And Longview Partner Up To Build A New Coliseum

Gregg County and the City of Longview are in the preliminary stages of planning for a new coliseum. The coliseum would be attached to the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center in Longview. It would seat up to 6,500 people and house everything from sporting events to concerts.

Officials say it could cost between $25 million and $28 million to build the facility.

The county would fund the construction and the city would run the facility.

Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt says taxes will not be raised to fund the facility.

"Both the City of Longview and  Gregg County are in excellent financial condition. We just paid off all our debt back in February. Gregg County owes no money. So, we as a county will be doing this without raising any taxes, and I think that's the important part here," said Judge Stoudt.

The coliseum plans could go before the Gregg County Commissioner's Court by the end of April. If approved, county officials say they could break ground on the coliseum in late November of 2008.

Judge Stoudt says the project would take two years to complete. If that happens the coliseum could open in the Spring of 2010.
