Pain At The Pump Jeopardizes East Texans Musical Volunteer Works

Every Wednesday, Julia Hampton fills up her 1982 Volkswagen Rabbit with a diesel engine. "I live in Tatum and I drive 25 miles in to get to my first stop in Longview.  I have a 50 mile round trip so my little truck is pretty good on fuel but it's a major concern to me," said Hampton.

The reason Hampton pays so much to travel from Tatum to Longview is because she plays the paino and sings sweet melodies with her group "Summerfield Trio".

Every Wednesday, they drive to several nursing homes in the Longview area to sing for free.

"Our residents just love Summerfield Trio. They've been coming here for years faithfully,"said Linda Ross, Volunteer Director at Highland Pines Nursing Home.

"I have friends that would love to volunteer, but they tell me gas is so expensive, they can't afford it. I can't afford it either, but I love doing what I'm doing and I'm going to continue to try to do it as long as I can," said Hampton. For nursing home residents, "Summerfield Trio" is a joy no doubt, and it would be a shame if their tunes stopped all because of the pain at the pump.

"I know that gas prices really effects their pocket books and I hurt for them and I don't want to lose them," said Ross.
