Longview Sirens Can Be Set Off Manually, Say Officials

The City of Longview now says they have a manual way of setting off the city's emergency sirens.

They are also working on a second alternative, with portable radios.

Last week, three of twenty emergency sirens failed to sound off before last Tuesday's tornado. To make matters worse, the sirens that did work sounded off after an eleven minute delay. Longview's mayor, Jay Dean, says he's tired of excuses about why the sirens have failed repeatedly.

"There's no excuse that it was a computer glitch, or they didn't know how to do it manually. That is just a total failure as far as I'm concerned. During an emergency situation, there's no room for guess work."

City officials are planning to test the sirens Wednesday, April 2nd, at noon. KLTV 7 News and KLTV.com will follow the test closely and bring you the results.
