Tyler Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years

They put their lives on the line everyday for us.  Saturday night, the City of Tyler celebrated its brave firemen and women.

The Tyler Fire Department held its annual awards banquet Saturday, but this year is special.  That's because it's the department's 100th anniversary.  Politicians like Congressmen Louie Gohmert, State Representative Leo Berman, State Senator Kevin Eltife and Tyler Mayor Joey Seeber thanked and honored the department for their hard work and selfless service.  The department also reflected on how far it's come since 1918.

"We've gone from just nothing, but a wagon and a horse, to these nice trucks with computers on them," said Tyler Fire Department Public Information Officer Jeff Akin.  "Air-packs we wear now that we can breathe, thermal imaging cameras where you can see in the dark with, so it's really come a long way and that's kind of our focus tonight."  Like every year, the department awards those who go above and beyond.  The Firefighter Of The Year Award for 2008 went to Jeff Hudgens.  Also, the Legends Award went to retired firefighter Arnold Powell.
