Smith County Jailer Achieves High Honor

Captain Gary Pinkerton is known around the Sheriff's department as the guy who gives one-hundred percent. And his hard work has just paid off.

Pinkerton, who heads Smith County Jail Operations, was recently elected president of the Texas Jail Association. The group oversees detention facilities across the state.

It's an honor that's seventeen years in the making for Pinkerton. A native of Tyler, he was already working in the jail at 18-years old. By 21, Pinkerton was a full-time jailer.

He's the first African-American elected president of the Texas Jail Association. He describes the new title as a major milestone in his career and lifetime.
