East Texas Woman's Purse Snatched In Doctor's Office

He skipped school and now an East Texas teenager is in trouble with the law.  Around 9:00 a.m. Monday morning, police say a 14-year-old Hubbard Middle School student snatched a woman's purse at the French Quarter Shopping Center in Tyler.  A short time later, police caught the teen near Hubbard and arrested him.

It was a routine visit to the eye doctor, Monday morning for Denise Carter, 47 that quickly turned chaotic.

"I was sitting in the chair with my purse sitting on the table behind me and a young man just ran in the store, snatched it and ran," said Carter.  Carter says she ran out the door after the teenager crying for help.  David Ray, a nearby maintenance worker heard the screaming.

"I took off after the guy, and chased him around the building," said ray.  When he heard the cry for help Ray says he didn't think twice about going after the teenager.  He chased him through the parking lot and even had to jump a fence to keep up with him.

"The lady just needed help," said Ray.  "Once he jumped the fence, I jumped the fence, and he threw her purse in the trash can and he basically out ran me."  A few minutes later, Police were there and took the 14-year-old boy into custody.  Police also recovered Carter's purse.

"It feels like your life has been ripped from you because you know you've got everything in there," said Carter.  "I was just minding my own business, just thinking about the things I had to do at work today and all of a sudden you think about how your life can change when your purse disappears."  Carter says she's grateful for people like Ray who stepped into help.  she also says she will now be much more aware of her surroundings.

Police say several people saw the teenager canvassing the area before he stole the purse.  The 14-year-old has been charged with felony theft.
