Run Off Election For Precinct 3 Commissioner

Republican candidates for Smith County Commissioner Precinct 3 incumbent Bobby Van Ness and Terry Phillips have five more weeks until you determine the winner of their race. Both candidates said they are not surprised, both even said they expected it with four candidates running for the position. Van Ness, a retired Tyler Police detective, won his seat in 2004 in a runoff election. He says he's done everything he promised to do this term.

"Cut employee turnover, saved taxpayer money, got better insurance plan for the county which has saved the county and the employees money. We have had twice as many roads repaired in the last three years than we had in past four and a half," said Van Ness, "We got the message from the voters about the jail issue and I think we are going to come to the table bring all the parites and come up with a downsized plan for the jail."

"My thing with the incumbent is he says he is not taking the raise.he says he listens to the voters but he didn't start listening to them till I made it an issue," said Terry Phillips, candidate for Precinct 3 Commissioner, "We are going to keep pressing forward with the issues I started with: the jail, the raises, the road and bridge having priority funding for the roads."

"I think I have common sense, business sense, had my own for 18 years, and I know how to manage money," said Phillips, "I think I will listen to constitutents not just at election time but all the time."

The run off election is April 8th.
