Longview Police Arrest Car Thief

On February 29, Longview officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Hutchings Boulevard in reference to the theft of a vehicle.  The victim told officers that he was repositioning a vehicle in his driveway to remove a second vehicle from his carport.  The victim told officers that the keys were left in the Chevrolet pickup while the victim moved the second vehicle.  The victim told officers that an unknown actor took the truck while the victim was distracted.

Several minutes later, Officer Christopher Byrdsong observed the stolen vehicle approach and park at the Rally Car Wash.  An officer approached and attempted to stop the vehicle.  The driver, Benjamin Baker, fled the scene.

As the truck approached the intersection of Humble and Houston Street, the suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

After a brief foot chase, Officer Byrdsong apprehended the suspect as he attempted to hide underneath a bush in the 300 block of Humble Street.  The suspect was taken into custody and charged with theft and evading arrest.

Benjamin Baker was taken to the Gregg County Jail and the stolen truck was returned to the owner.
