Win Mill! Lady Mustangs Claim State Title

Wednesday was Martin's Mill girls basketball coach Doug Barncastle's birthday. His teams gift would come with a tough promise: Win him a state championship this weekend.

The Lady Mustangs made good on their promise.

Top ranked Martin's Mill played second ranked Sudan for the Class A Division I Championship.

Taylor Daniel had 18 points for Martin's Mill and hit two key free throws to seal a 48-43 win.

It is the second state championship for the Lady Mustangs in three years. Martin's Mill has made three straight appearances in the state tournament.

Jordan Barncastle was named the MVP with 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals. A bittersweet moment for Jordan, playing in her last game with her father as her coach. The two showed some emotion after the big win.

"It's a special feeling just because of the three girls next to me," Doug Barncastle said. "When I first got here, they were part of that team that won state. It's even more of a special feeling, with my daughter, a senior going out on top. Words can't describe it. It's hard to say."

"This doesn't happen very often," Jordan said, "and to be able to out as the number one team in the state that says a lot, can't ask for much more, and we accomplished everything that we hoped for."

Martin's Mill finishes the season 35-4.
