Past Cowboy Newton Visits Tyler, Talks Cowboys Future

Nate Newton has always been a favorite for many cowboy fans, mostly because he does not hold back on what he wants to say.

Nate did not  hold back in Tyler Thursday evening as he spoke with fans. Nate was in Tyler and on location with KTBB Sports Director David Smoak. The former Cowboys lineman answered fan questions and phone calls.

KLTV Sports took some time and asked Nate about his old team, the upcoming draft, free agency and the Cowboys future.

When asked about the draft, Newton responded immediately. "I think we need to get an offensive lineman with one of those picks. We need a wide receiver because we are old at the receiver spot. But more important we may need a defensive back too."

"It's a lot of ways you can go in the draft but I think you have to protect yourself with an offensive lineman. If you go to Green Bay with Brett Favre and New England with Tom Brady these guys never have offensive line problems, I mean, (New England) had little problems in the Super Bowl but other than that, you have to keep your quarterback upright."

On Cowboys new signee Zach Thomas:

"That isn't for me. I love Zach. He's a great guy, great for any NFL team, a great community guy, but we're looking to win a Super Bowl, we're not a retirement home."

On the Cowboys future:

"We have got to get some leaders. We don't have no leaders on this team, guys that can take over games and control games and make things happen at the end. I'm hoping Tony Romo can grow up. Bradie James is somewhat of a leader but now his leadership is questioned with the signing of Zach Thomas. We need some horses. We need some studs. Guys like when I played: Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman you know? Guys that can not only go out there and talk the game but they can walk the game and make things happen at the end. I just don't see it on this team yet."

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
