Area Basketball Teams Headed To State Tournament

One, two or even three East Texas basketball teams could be state champions by the end of the week.

Leading the way, the Winnsboro Lady Red Raiders.

Five appearances at the state basketball tournament means your good, 11 means you are a dynasty. No question that is the best word to describe the Winnsboro Lady Raiders as they make their 11th appearance in the state tournament this Friday.

They will meet Tuscola Jim Ned at 8:30 a.m at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

It is a tradition in Winnsboro to send the Lady Red Raiders to Austin with as much fan fare as possible. The community will gather at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Winnsboro High School gym to send the team on their way.

The Martin's Mill Lady Mustangs will make their third straight appearance in the state tournament this Thursday.

The Lady Mustangs won it all in 2006. Last season in the semifinals they lost by just two points in overtime to Lindsay. This Thursday, Martin's Mill will face Lindsay again in the semifinals.

That game is set 10 a.m. also at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

On Wednesday Lady Mustangs fans will be out in full force for a big pep rally and sendoff before the team heads to Austin. It will be held at the high school gym at 9:30 a.m.

In TAPPS, 11th ranked Brook Hill The Guard is also vying for a state title. The TAPPS tournament is in San Antonio.

The guard plays Kingwood Northeast Christian at 1 p.m. Friday at the Alamo Convocation Center.
