Schools Back Open In Jefferson After Train Derailment

An East Texas school is evacuated after a train carrying potentially hazardous gases derails.   Around 7:00 a.m. Jefferson police say four freight train cars derailed at the intersection of Austin and Alley Street.  Crews are on the scene now cleaning up the mess.  At one time, the tanks were carrying propane, but fortunately, police say the cars were empty when they derailed.

As a precaution, officials with the Jefferson Independent School District shut down the junior high campus and moved those students to the high school campus.  The students will remain there until the derailment is cleaned up.  More than 800 residents from a nearby neighborhood were also evacuated.  They have not yet been allowed back in their homes.
