State championships will be decided next weekend, but not on a field, a diamond, a court, or dry land of any kind.
Some East Texas athletes are swimming their way to state. The area will have plenty of athletes in Austin next weekend, for the state swimming championships. Swimmers from Whitehouse, Chapel Hill, and Henderson were working out today getting ready for their big meet. Three of them were returning to the state capital for another shot.
"My sophomore year was probably the hardest," Whitehouse senior Brittany Wilkens said. "I was really nervous, but this is my third year going, and I'm definitely ready for it."
"It gets you in great shape," Athens swimmer Cody Robson said. "It gives you something to do, really."
"If I didn't do this, I wouldn't do anything," Robson laughs.
"Last year, I didn't really know much about it," Chapel Hill sophomore swimmer Jennifer Steele said. "Now that I've gotten used to it, I know what to expect...I hope it works this time."
The state championship will be February 22-23 in Austin at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center, on the campus of the University of Texas.
