Longview Emergency Siren System

K.L.T.V. studios in Tyler and Longview were swamped Friday morning with phone calls from people who were alarmed at the emergency sirens going off in the area, when there was no tornado warning.

Emergency sirens went off just before 10 Friday morning in Longview during the height of the storm, creating some nervous moments for people in the area.

According to city policy, only the fire chief Richard Lazarus and the city emergency operations center are authorized to sound the siren system... But in this case, because there was no threatening weather report from the national weather service, no one was manning the center. Citizen reports of possible tornado's led to a 9-1-1 supervisor activating the sirens.
