Bullard Church Sees Skating As Ministry Tool

It was an interesting transformation, from church parking lot, to church skate park.  Members of the East Lake Baptist Church in Bullard said over the last couple of months, they've seen extreme success from extreme sports.

"We were looking for a new ministry to reach out to a new group of kids," said East Lake Baptist Church member Tim Fergerson.  From ramps and grind bars, to rail slides, Fergerson said the skate park is about ministry.

"Every Sunday after church we have the kids out here, and we do a small devotional with them," said Fergerson.  He said the goal behind the skate park is to teach children about God.

"If we can provide them with a fun environment to do this in, then it's all for the better," said Ferguson.

"I love to skateboard, and I love God, so those two things put together at a church can't be bad," said Doug Lake, 14, a frequent visitor and skater.  Kassie Cushman, 13,  a member of East Lake said the program helps other people learn about God, while having fun.

Members say the program is reaching more children, and attendance is up.  Each week, there are more kids, more families, and more skateboards.

"The enthusiasm has been great," said East Lake Baptist Church Pastor Ken Goode.  "We're just glad to have all the activity."  He said young people are the future of the church.

"It's an investment into this community," said Goode.  It's an investment the church hopes can rollover into a whole new generation.
