Patriots Open Season on Hendrix With DH Win

Last year, the UT Tyler baseball team was the best team that couldn't.

In spite of going 37-1, winning their division again, and having two guys drafted to the majors, they just couldn't.

As a new program, they were ineligible for the conference playoffs, national rankings, and the NCAA Tournament even though an online poll said if they could get votes, they'd be the number one team in the country.

As of Saturday, they finally can.

That was opening day at Irwin Field, where the fully-playoff-eligible patriots swept a double-header from Hendrix, 21-6 and 19-3.

"We're excited to get that first pitch thrown," Patriots coach James Vilade said. "What's happened in the last four years is very important, it's established us as a quality college program. The honors that some of the players have received are well deserved, but this is a new point for this program, and we look forward to the opportunity to get into the playoffs."
