Elementary Students Donate Jar Full Of Pennies To Charity

It's a special donation for an East Texas charity and it's all in pennies. Wednesday morning, students at Bonner Elementary in Tyler presented a jug full of 40,000 pennies, equaling $400 to the St. Paul's Children's Foundation. Don Juan's Mexican Restaurant agreed to match what the students raised, donating a $400 check. The students say everyday, they brought in as many pennies as they could find.

"We had to bring pennies and more pennies and to count them. It makes me feel good because it's a way to say thank you," says second-grader Jacquelene Garcia

"It shows that they recognize the importance of this foundation to their community and to their neighborhood," says Phil Jensen, Board President of St. Paul's Children's Foundation. "They are good children and they've done a good thing."

The organization says it will use the money for their pediatric medical clinic, pediatric dental clinic, clothes closet and food pantry.
