SENATE URGED TO PASS FAITH-BASED INITIATIVE THIS MONTH

Jim Towey (TOO'-ee) says that unless faith-based legislation is passed in the next three weeks, it will probably be set aside until after the November elections.

But Towey, who heads the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, says he's confident that the Senate can pass the bill by Memorial Day and reconcile differences with the House version.

Towey says the Senate bill preserves the rights of religious groups to limit hiring to fellow believers -- even if they accept federal funds. It also would extend charitable deductions to taxpayers who don't itemize.
