TYLER OBSERVES NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER WITH MAYOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST

Hundreds of people gathered at Tyler's Harvey Convention Center early Thursday morning for the Annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast.

The event coincides with the 51st Annual National Day of Prayer.

Pastor Lawrence White of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Houston was featured speaker. Pastor White challenged Christians to get involved in the political process and to pray for local, state and national leaders.

A number of Tyler pastors then led the group in prayers for President Bush and national, state and Tyler officials. There were also prayers for East Texas Teenagers and for the conflict in the Middle East.

The theme for May's National Day of Prayer is "America United Under God."

The National Day of Prayer dates back to February 19, 1795, when President George Washington issued a proclamation setting aside a day of public thanksgiving. An annual day of prayer was established by Congress in 1952 and specifically designated in 1988 as the first Thursday in May.
