Drowning Death at Lake Palestine

The first drowning death of the season took the life of a 23-year-old man this afternoon at Lake Palestine.

Around two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, a man and woman, whose names have not been released, rented a pontoon boat from flat creek.

They took it out on the water near "The Village of the Lake Resort".

A game warden says once the couple was about 200 yards from shore the 23 year old jumped off the pontoon for a swim but the rough water was too difficult for him to fight. The man reportedly cried out for help, but his girlfriend could not get to him in time.

The warden says he did not beleive there were life vests on the pontoon. Warden Chris Green says stories like this one are what makes his job so tough.

"You know it is kind of frustrating. You know I don't know what they were doing out there and we have wind warning out here on the lake today. You certainly don't jump off a boat into a lake with two or three foot swells," says Green.

Warden Green says they will send divers out on the lake to look for the body as soon as the windy conditions subside.
