East Texas Infant Drowns In Bath Tub

A nine-month-old baby boy is left alone in a bath tub over the weekend and later dies.  Tyler police say they were called out to Abby Apartments, Saturday morning where there was an unresponsive infant.  The apartments are located on Thistle Drive.  When they got there, police say they learned the baby boy had drowned in the bath tub.

Police say the infant's mother and her boyfriend left the nine-month-old alone in the bath tub with the baby's 19-month-old brother.  When they got back, police say they found the nine-month-old face down in the water.  The mother and boyfriend immediately called 9-1-1.  Paramedics tried to resuscitate the baby, but were not able to save him.  The boyfriend, police say also tried to revive the baby before emergency crews arrived.

Now, the boyfriend is Robert Kassube, 46.  You may remember seeing him on KLTV 7 last week.  Our cameras were there as Kassube was arrested, Thursday and taken in on charges of evading arrest, driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance.  Police say they found more than 80 pills in his truck that were a form of Xanax.  Right now, however, police are not calling him a suspect in the drowning.

"We will question everyone involved," said Tyler Police Officer Don Martin.  "The investigators are looking into it thoroughly. The child has been transported to Dallas for an autopsy, so we will certainly look into all the details involving the incident and see what we can determine."   According to police records, Kassube bonded out of jail Friday afternoon.  Police also say CPS has removed the 19-month-old brother from the apartment.  He's now living with a family member.
